How We Hand-Painted a Life-Size Samoyed Statue — Our Biggest Custom Pet Piece Yet

Be honest — when you saw the first photo, did you do a double take? 😄 You're not alone. This is the biggest custom piece we've ever made at Taco&Tues: a life-size, 1:1 hand-painted Samoyed statue, sculpted and painted entirely from a customer's photos. No AI, no shortcuts — just a lot of hours, a lot of tiny brushes, and a whole lot of love for this fluffy good boy.

Here's how a stack of photos became a dog you'd swear was about to wag its tail.

It started with a challenge

Most of our pieces are pocket-sized — fridge magnets, desk figurines, portrait necklaces. But this customer wanted something bigger: their Samoyed, captured at true-to-life scale. A full-size statue means every proportion, every curl of that famous "Sammy smile," and every fluffy layer has to be exactly right. There's nowhere to hide.

The hand-painting process, step by step

Every Taco&Tues piece is hand-sculpted and hand-painted — and this one took it to a new level:

  1. Studying the pet. We start from your photos, learning your dog's markings, fur direction, and expression. (This is why a few clear, front-facing photos matter so much.)
  2. Sculpting the form. The shape is built and refined by hand until the posture feels like your pet — not a generic dog.
  3. Painting, layer by layer. Fur isn't one color. We build it up in fine layers for that soft, dimensional Samoyed white — plus the creams and shadows that make fur look real, not flat.
  4. The eyes and details. The eyes are where a pet comes alive, so they're painted last and with the most care.
  5. You approve before we ship. We send you a preview first. Only when you say it looks like your baby does it head out the door.

What makes it look so lifelike?

The magic is in the details most people never notice: the direction the fur falls, the warmth in the eyes, the exact shape of the smile. Because it's painted by a real artist — not generated by AI — we match the little quirks that make your pet yours.

Want a mini-me of your own pet?

You don't need a life-size statue to get this level of craftsmanship. Every Taco&Tues piece — from our hand-painted magnetic figurines to our custom pet portrait necklaces — is made by the same hands, from your own photos. Larger custom commissions like this Samoyed are available too — just reach out.

FAQ

How do you make a custom pet statue?
We hand-sculpt and hand-paint each piece from your photos, then paint the fur in fine layers. No AI is used.

What photos do I need?
At least one clear, front-facing photo in natural light. More angles help us capture your pet even more accurately.

Can I get my own pet as a life-size statue?
Yes — alongside our figurines and necklaces, we take larger custom commissions. Reach out and we'll walk you through it.

Will it really look like my pet?
That's the goal — and we send you a preview to approve before we ship, so you're never surprised.
